Sender ID (SID)
A Sender ID (SID) is what recipients see as the sender of an SMS message.
Atomic supports two types of Sender ID:
- SMS-capable DID numbers, such as a Virtual Mobile Number.
- Approved company or brand names.
DID Numbers
DID numbers assigned to voice services for the same customer can be used as Sender ID when they are SMS capable.
An SMS-capable DID, such as a Virtual Mobile Number, must first be assigned to a voice service. This allows the number to also be used for calls when needed.
You can manage which DID numbers are available to the end customer from the service configuration page.
If the same customer has multiple SMS services, a DID Sender ID can only be selected once. After it is selected for one service, it cannot be selected for another service.
Brand Name
You can register a company or brand name for the end customer. Once approved, the brand name can be used as the Sender ID when sending SMS messages. Recipients will see the brand name instead of a number.
When using a brand name as Sender ID:
- The brand name only appears for messages sent within Australia.
- Recipients cannot reply to messages sent from a brand name.
- Brand names are limited to 11 characters.
Register a Brand Name
Brand Name registration now opens the ACMA Brand Registration flow. The previous Add Brand Name pop-up has been replaced with Register Brand Name.
Where to find it
Step 1: Sign in to the Atomic portal.
Step 2: Go to Services > SMS Services.
Step 3: Open the SMS service you want to update.
Step 4: Select the Sender ID tab.
Step 5: In the Brand Name section, click Register Brand Name.
The ACMA Brand Registration wizard will open in a new tab, with the selected SMS service already carried into the registration flow.
What happens next
Complete the ACMA Brand Registration wizard to register the sender name that recipients will see when they receive your SMS messages.
You may need to provide supporting details or a short justification for the brand name.
After submission, you can track the registration status from the ACMA Brand Registration area. Once approved, the Brand Name can appear in the SMS service Brand Name list and can be selected as a Sender ID.
From 1 July 2026, SMS sender names used for messages to Australian recipients must be registered with ACMA. Unregistered sender names may display as Unverified to recipients.
